Williams James, the father of American psychology, said it best when he said, "The most important discovery of our time is the realization that we can alter our lives by altering out attitudes."
What is your attitude like? Is it consistent, or does it change with the economy, traffic, sales, life at home, or when the wind blows? I hope you took that last part tongue-in-cheek, but at the same time I hope it made you think, what is your attitude like?
Take a look at your bad days, the days or even weeks when you sold nothing, what was your attitude like then? I'm not talking about the days when you spoke to only one person, but those days when you spoke with a dozen and still sold nothing, what was it like? Odds are you felt as low as your closing average, that's because attitude dictates everything, especially sales!
Altering Your Attitude
It's easy to place the blame on others, it makes you feel better, but in the end the only way you are going to create a better attitude is by taking the blame, learning from it, and then moving on. Want to know the secret: Always remind yourself of the bigger picture!
You do have a bigger picture don't you? Do you know what you want out of life? If you know where you're heading, because you've put the time in to truly define it, then the setbacks that you'll see along the way won't put such a damper on your attitude. That's the first thing I want you to keep in mind:
#1 Know The Bigger Picture
Do you have clearly defined goals? Have you put in the time necessary to figure out where your life is going? Always remember that the path to success is a journey, that there will be setbacks, but it's in how you deal with those setbacks that will determine both your attitude and your success. By keeping your eyes on the prize, so to speak, you are better able to weather the storms that will blow in from time to time. I'm not talking about being oblivious to what is going around you but I am taking about pushing forward toward your goal, no matter what happens.
#2 Failure Is Part Of Success
Sometimes we spend our lives avoiding failure, but the fact of the matter is that it's an integral part of success. By seeing failure for what it is, a learning experience, you will be better equipped to reach your goals. In other words, learn from your mistakes, let them make your stronger and understand that failures are part of success, as much as it's part of life, just don't let it get you down, don't let it define who you are.
#3 Stay Positive And Optimistic
Staying positive and optimistic has been proven to improve your health, happiness and your overall success. No matter how tough life gets always stay positive that you will reach your goal, never let self-doubt creep in and totally eradicate negativity from the sales floor and your life. When life starts to wear on you, use it to reinvigorate yourself.
#4 Believe In Yourself
Never doubt that you have what it takes. You ARE smart enough, you DO have what it takes to be successful, never tell yourself differently. Belief in one's self is what sets apart the average automotive sales person and the true sales professional. Belief breeds confidence, confidence breeds a healthy attitude and a healthy attitude can alter your life, significantly, for the better. Always believe!
#5 Be Patient
Success takes time, if you want start out on top, become a ditch digger. Know that anything worth doing is worth doing right, that it's worth taking the time necessary to see it through. Be patient. Don't think just because it takes more than a week to complete that you don't have what it takes, instead read #4 above and always, always remember, that Rome wasn't built in a day.
Too Simplistic?
No. Maybe they come across that way after reading them, but when you put them into practice you will no doubt begin to notice a big change in your attitude, an attitude that will alter your life for the better, help you to sell more cars and increase the joy you get out of everything. Live your life with an abundance of healthily attitude, create the new you, be who you you've always wanted to be, the only thing standing in your way... is attitude.
What can you add, what do you do to create a healthy attitude in your life?
